The Psychotherapy Process

Starting psychotherapy can be challenging for some while others feel an immediate connection, as if they’re experiencing something long awaited. If you have questions about the process, I will provide a complimentary 20-minute consultation where we will discuss your needs. I will recommend a framework and modality best-suited for this stage of your journey, and connect you with an NPC psychotherapist or personalized referral.

NPC is a boutique psychological service suite, where clients are drawn to the dynamic professionalism of our team’s expertise. We are staffed by senior licensed psychologists, a licensed clinical social worker, an American board certified practitioner of experiential therapy, a certified couples and sex therapist, and specialists in trauma-informed care (TIC). As the founder and lead psychologist, I consult with our team regarding all aspects of client care.

Our psychotherapists share a depth-psychodynamic conceptual lens with an integrative approach, borrowing insights from diverse models based on client needs: Trauma and neuroscience-informed, family systems and couples therapy models, transpersonal, evidence-based somatic, and nervous system regulation practices including those drawn from DBT. Collaboratively, we offer outstanding and compassionate service.

Moreover, we recognize that therapy is both a science and an art. We synthesize scientific knowledge and evidence-based methods with experiential wisdom and intuitive insights. Our own self-awareness, coupled with empathic presence, allows us to deeply connect with our clients and empower them to live the lives they truly desire.

Our specializations include all seasons of intimate relationships, family conflict, enmeshment and individuation, prenatal, pregnancy, and parenting concerns, life transitions, trauma therapy following emotional, physical, sexual, narcissistic abuse, or neglect, dissociated states, self-abandonment, overwhelm and anxiety, nervous system regulation, depression, feelings of meaninglessness, self-sabotage, psychosomatic conditions, chronic illness and pain, masking and true self emergence, and honing one’s intuition, creativity, and leadership development.

Treating our comrades in mental health and medicine is a great privilege. We approach this work with a keen awareness of the unique stressors; the realities of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, perceived invulnerability, exhaustion, fear of medical error reporting, and the radical need for self-care. Insight, we believe, is a powerful tool—not only for personal fulfillment, but also for enhancing patient relationships and medical outcomes.

Treatment duration, frequency and modality are tailored to your needs.

“Imagine life as an ascending a spiral staircase—a journey that circles back to familiar experiences and memories. On each revolution, we gain mastery over unresolved and warded-off feelings, thoughts, and once-unbearable truths. Life transcends mere repetition; it brims with opportunities for healing, integration, reconnection, and authentic self-expression. As we ascend, we aspire to experience feelings of wholeness, centeredness, freedom of expression, and a profound connection with humanity—the cornerstones of psychological well-being.

In the realm of psychodynamic-relational psychotherapy, our realness and empathic presence as therapists provides fertile ground for trust and openness. We establish a holding environment—a safe space— where clients can explore, discover, and transform their inner landscape. The shift in one’s sense of self catalyzes transformations in one’s “way of being” in the world. As they project their core relational themes onto the relationship, we attune to their emotional, cognitive, and somatic cues. We listen not only what is spoken but also to the unspoken, understanding the nuances that shape their subjectivity.

By thoughtfully sharing our observations and interpretations, as well as our own experience of being with the client, we facilitate their ability to articulate and narrate their inner world. This process is akin to “vicarious introspection”. The pinnacle of the journey is often a profound realization: They are not only understandable but also lovable.

From this base of trust, we embark on a deeply human exploration. We uncover the connecting threads between the client’s present concerns and their relational origins. This process promotes insight, self-acceptance, and liberation from self-imposed limitation. Beyond that, the very act of participating in this shared journey—therapist and client together—becomes a powerful catalyst for healing, growth, and emergence.

~This passage reflects my philosophical orientation and beliefs about the human experience, the therapy process, and its interactional nature. It also represents the collective wisdom of many, including my esteemed advisor and co-founder of Intersubjectivity Theory, George Atwood, PhD, advisor and relational psychoanalyst, Susan Warshaw, PhD, object-relations thought leader, Donald Winnicott, PhD, and key concepts from The Son-rise Program by The Option Institute. I am beyond grateful for their influence on my life’s work.”
